ABOUT

My name is Carl Ludvig Ståle, and this is my story…

I have always been somewhat of an inventor —tinkering, building, with an ever search for that missing piece to make it work. My journey began as a carpenter, here I developed an understanding for materials, craftsmanship, and structural integrity. Seeking to expand that foundation, I transitioned into industrial design engineering. This allowed me to bridge the gap between aesthetics, engineering, and manufacturing, transforming raw ideas into physical products that are useful, desirable, and built to last.

The brand of C.L Ståle is a tribute to my grandfather, Ståle. Fleeing to Sweden with his parents during the war, he eventually built a family and established his own life as a professional glazier, fitting glass into windows and doors. He was a true craftsman who preserved a profession rooted in history. Sharing his name and his legacy, I wanted to start a business that honors how things used to be made—looking to the past to build a better future.

The idea behind C.L Ståle stemmed from an urge to challenge the current linear model of take-make-waste, and instead incorporate that of a circular one where we take, make and remake until we finally recycle it back to the earth from where it came. For this to be possible we need to design products that we can repair, renew and upgrade by making sure it's easy for every single piece to be repurposed or remanufactured and then, at the very end, recycled and not wasted.

This is the essence of what CL Ståle stands for, creating products living multiple lives, until one day they are needed somewhere else, by someone else as something else entirely…

THE MAKING OF A LAMP

It all started with an idea, a quest to create something beautiful of something as simple as a piece of paper. Thus, and exploration of this medium began where the result ended up in waxing the paper, creating an almost see-through surface. By then shaping the paper it creates cracks in the surface of the wax, visualizing an almost vain like structure… a defining element of the creations of C.L Ståle.

The lamps of C.L Ståle are all made by hand, creating a uniquely shaped item for each customer. The material of the shades derives from sustainably harvested Swedish woods which are then turned into sheets of pulp. The wax is made from Swedish grown rape-seed which is then heated to a liquid form to be able to saturate the paper. After the shades are formed they are combined with a metal canopy, a textile cable and a porcelain lampholder, all made in Italy for a fully sustainable product, sourced from within the EU.
